You might not hear about the PJM Interconnect every time your local weatherman warns of an upcoming heat wave, but you probably should. In the midst of another heat wave, the Valley Forge power grid dispatch center, which distributes power to customers from North Carolina to New York, does a daily delicate dance that is part art and part science.
Clean Skies News examines PJM's load forecasting, staffing and sophisticated grid simulator. Last month, PJM came within only 8,000 megawatts of its record load, set in August, 2006.
