A Pittsburgh geothermal heating company has saved a historic HillDistrict church from watery deterioration, thanks to an alternativeenergy project that will provide low-cost heat to residents andbusinesses on Herron Avenue.
Better yet, the potential exists for more sustainable projects of this kind.
For years, the John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church andsurrounding neighborhood has struggled to divert water that had seepedinto the 162-year-old structure and surrounding homes from an abandonedmine that rests below the neighborhood.
The problem is common toour region, says Rev. Calvin Cash, who went to the state forassistance. Through the Pa. Energy Harvest program, Wesley received$81,000 for a pilot geothermal project that will provide inexpensiveheat to the church and surrounding area. It may also pave the way forsimilar geothermal projects in our region, says Cash.
