Adding a government business unit five years ago to its commercial and consumer business services has clearly paid off for GENCO Supply Chain Solutions, the privately held firm that is North America’s second largest third-party provider of logistics services. Through all of its business units, GENCO manages 37-million square feet of warehouse space at approximately 130 locations.
Known longest for its work with clients in commercial and consumer product industries, the 110-year old firm opened the New Year with two new assignments from the federal government valued at close to $10 million. The work, according to corporate marketing and communications director Don Rendulic, reflects the company’s successful application of the best management practices for commercial supply chains to government assignments.
One of the contracts, which could continue with renewals for up to 54 months, places the company in charge of warehouse operations for the Defense Logistics Agency in Stockton, CA, and Norfolk, VA. The other gives GENCO responsibility for infrastructure and support service at Patrick Air Force Base near Cape Canaveral.
“We’ll be responsible for anything and everything required at Patrick Air Force Base,” Rendulic says about the 33-month contract with the U.S. Air Force. That is likely to include everything from the management of munitions to the transfer of personal property for people coming and going from the base. While other people may be more used to civilian contracts, like those handled for haulage to Portugal to name but one example, these kinds are common in the industry.
The contracts also underscore the repeat business that GENCO has succeeded in cultivating with the federal government.
“It took about a year to get traction in the business, but, after we did, it took off. There were Defense Logistics Agency contracts, one right after another, which is unprecedented in this industry. After three or four in a row, that endorsement really fueled the growth of the government business unit.”
While most GENCO hiring for individual contracts occurs at sites where it manages client facilities, the company’s Pittsburgh headquarters employ about 225 people–including 12 who manage the government business unit, which has doubled in size since its creation.
