If you want something done right, do it yourself. That could easily be the motto of LightFile Solutions founders Quentin and Tim Kushner of Harrisburg–twin brothers who developed the document management system LightFile.
The pair started out four years ago as KCG Support, a tech support company that would recommend, install and manage software systems for companies–until they realized they could build something better.
“They saw what people liked and didn’t like, and on the back burner they developed their own document management system,” says Ruth Coburn, project coordinator for LightFile. “They pitched it to one of their clients, who didn’t like the one they had recommended, and the client said yes.”
That was about a year and a half ago. Since then, the Kushner brothers have been adding clients steadily. Part of LightFile’s attractiveness to smaller companies–medical and law offices–is that it is much more affordable than other software-as-a-service (SaaS) providers because it has no license fees. While some license-based systems can cost $40,000 a year, LightFile only costs about $5,000 a year.
“Comparable software that comes anywhere near what this can do is twice the price,” Coburn says. “And it’s very easy to use–like Google for your file cabinets.”
And it saves companies money, especially paper-intensive businesses, because it saves time managing paperwork and improves efficiency. While LightFile is one of many SaaS providers throughout the country, it is one of the first to make such services affordable to small businesses.
“Many companies have not taken steps to move to electronic record keeping, so we’re at a place in time where we are well positioned,” Coburn says. “A lot of companies know they need to switch to this but they’re not sure how. As companies have more of a need to be efficient and save money, it becomes a huge incentive.”
