MeadWestvaco Corp plans to hire up to 16 workers at its facility in Williamsburg within the next six weeks, according to Julie McEwan, communications manager for the consumer and office products division of the international packaging company.
“Yes, we are in the process of doing some hiring at our envelope products facility in Williamsburg,” McEwan says. “We hope to be hiring twelve to sixteen machine tenders as the market permits, and we hope to fill those positions within the next 4 to 6 weeks.”
Well known for Day Runner and At a Glance organizers, Mead Westvaco manufactures a wide variety of paper supplies for note taking, organizing, and planning at school, in the office and at home, including notebooks, binders, stationery, filing supplies, and envelopes.
In January, as part of a cost-cutting move, Mead West announced plans to close an envelope manufacturing and distribution operation located at its Enfield, Conn., plant, and transfer those operations and equipment to other facilities where it manufactures envelopes.
The gain for the Williamsburg operation appears to provide a payback on a relationship that the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development has been cultivating with MWV for the last two years. Two years ago, the DCED provided more than $800,000 in funding to back a $2 million expansion project at the Williamsburg plant, where MWV employs 283 workers.
