Harrisburg University’s $73 million academic center to fuel STEM skills, local economy

on

It’s only been three years since Harrisburg University of Science and Technology welcomed its first incoming class of students. With the official opening of its $73 million, 16-story Academic Center last week, the school is positioned to lead a new pathway of economic opportunity throughout Central Pennsylvania.

The school was founded to address the need of Pennsylvania’s Capital Region for increased educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as “STEM” skills. Its mission includes “a dedication to create, attract and expand economic opportunities in the region.” The 371,000 square foot Academic Center boasts six scientific labs and 24 ultramodern classrooms.

”(Our public and private sector partners) understand that investing in Harrisburg University not only enables our students to thrive in highly sought after STEM careers, but also positions our region–and our nation–to be a competitive force in the global economy,” said Dr. Eric Darr, Executive Vice President and Provost at the school, which is one of the largest economic development projects the region has ever undertaken, with more than $63.5 million in capital investment.

An economic impact analysis conducted last May revealed the university contributes $16.25 million into the local economy. The school also created 150 full-time jobs and about 25 part-time jobs. In the next decade, the school projects the creation of 450 jobs and 350,000 square feet of new academic space and believes it can spark investment in an additional 660,000 square feet of entirely new or rehabilitated corporate, retail, residential and research office and laboratory space in downtown Harrisburg.
