Market leader certification has King of Prussia’s Devon IT spreading thin-client message

on

King of Prussia-based technology firm Devon IT was already the fastest growing provider of thin client–or alternative desktop–terminals, but with the news that its thin clients have become VMware Ready Certified, the company is preparing to take its next big step in the rapidly growing alternative desktop business.

Devon IT’s thin clients, which are computers that depend primarily on a central server for processing activities, passed VMware Certification Program testing for use with VMware View and are now listed on the VMware View Compatability Guide. With VMware being the market leader in virtualization, the certification opens a lot of doors for Devon IT. The company’s thin clients, which deliver a standard Windows desktop that is hosted on a server and physically presented via a small footprint device, are already in schools, hospitals, even on the floor of the state senate.

Company president Joe Makoid says one of Devon IT’s key initiatives is driving this model around the world and increasing awareness.

“Once customers get aware, we want to accelerate market growth,” he says.

There are many advantages to the thin client, drawing up to 150 watts of electricity less than average PCs. Also, thin clients start almost immediately with authentication, while PCs can sometimes take minutes to boot. Repairs and technical issues can also be resolved in one place, the thin client’s central data center.

Within the next few weeks, Devon IT, which has partnered with IBM on several projects in the last four years, will announce its Virtual Desktop Initiative (VDI) Blaster, a tool to extend the life of a PC, manage it within a data center, and then convert to the thin client if and when the PC fails.

“It’s a great way of testing our approach,” says Makoid.
