Run! Blobfest comes to Phoenixville

on
Heading to downtown Phoenixville this weekend? Grab your tin foil hat–and prepare to run.

A handmade chapeau of aluminum–the wackier the better– is the preferred attire for those attending the tenth annual celebration of Blobfest, a salute to the cheesy ’50s horror flick that put the Chester County town on the screen in 1959.

Starring a youthful Steve McQueen, “The Blob” staged one scene of a panicked crowd stampede at downtown’s Colonial Theatre. Each year for the past decade, the theater (now run as a non-profit corporation) has invited the public to reenact the scene on Friday night, kicking off three days of rock music, celebrity appearances, costume contests, and celebrations of all things blob-like. The foil hats? They protect against evil alien space rays.

Mary Foote, executive director of the Colonial Theatre, says local merchants grab their biggest weekend revenues when BlobFest comes to town, as restaurants and hotels fill with several thousand visitors.
