Web design firm MudBrick Creative has built a name for itself in central Pennsylvania with its edgy, interactive approach to building websites. Among others it has designed sites for are Troegs Brewing Co. and Wear Your Music. And now MudBrick has been contracted to design a fully interactive website to draw visitors to Gettysburg and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The contract with the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau shows that an eight-person company in Harrisburg can perform on a national stage, says MudBrick principal Paul Benninghove Jr.
“A central PA-based design studio can compete with the big boys,” Benninghove says.
MudBrick has ambitious plans for the website, including an illustrated map and timeline of the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place over three days in July 1863 and is widely viewed as a turning point in the Civil War. The map will include 3-D components that viewers can zoom in on, and MudBrick hopes to land voice-over talent from actor Sam Waterston. The site will also have a database where users can look up ancestors who are listed on battlefield monuments. The website should be online this summer.
“It has to serve two purposes. It has to get people to want to visit the battlefield and the town, and it has to be fun to use,” Benninghove says. “We’re using this experience as a way to put our mark on a piece of history.”
MudBrick hopes to expand its footprint beyond central Pennsylvania, with a goal of deriving at least half its revenue from clients beyond the region.
