Next month, nonfiction writers from all over the world will convene in Lancaster for the three-day HippoCamp 2016 conference. It’s a chance for sponsor Hippocampus Magazine, an online journal dedicated to creative nonfiction, to celebrate its mission to “entertain, educate and engage.”
“We could hold this conference anywhere, really, but I am thrilled to welcome people to central Pennsylvania, to show off beautiful, historic and charming Lancaster County,” says Donna Talarico, the magazine’s founder and publisher. “We have several blocks of time built into the schedule so that attendees can explore downtown Lancaster, including Central Market, a famous landmark. We have so many shops and galleries and restaurants here — Lancaster is more than sprawling farmlands and Amish culture. Downtown is vibrant and even a bit hip.”
Running August 12 through 14, the conference will offer sessions on topics ranging from getting published in literary magazines to the ethics of writing true stories. There will also be readings, open mic nights and more. Memoirist Mary Karr, essayist Ashley C. Ford and Dave Cameron of Ithaca College are the keynote speakers.
Registration closes on July 31.
