Beyond Lancaster: What City or Town is PA’s Next Big Thing?

on

In less than a week, our April 26 story on Lancaster's ascent to America's Most Livable City status became the most-read original story in Keystone Edge since it launched in Oct., 2008.

It wasn't entirely surprising the story was so widely read and appreciated. After all, it was a tale of overcoming past missteps and honing in on a variety of transformational factors — from the arts to business development to residential offerings — that helped Lancaster realize its full potential.

That got us thinking: Who's got next? Rather, what Pennsylvania city or town will be the next to garner attention for its livability and smart growth?

Just this week, Philadelphia was pondered as America's next tech town by Fast Company. In the past 18 months, we've featured transformation in places like Wilkes-Barre (also a rising tech sector) and Lewisburg (thriving downtown). We've also looked at places like Braddock, which has received a boatload of national attention for its super-sized mayor with dreams to match.

Now, we want to hear from you. We're going to take this discussion to Facebook and Twitter and over the course of the next few months, initiate a conversation on what Pennsylvania cities or towns demonstrate the most promise as a bastion of state pride and the standard-bearer for what's next. In the Fall, we'll begin writing about those places that hold such promise.

Maybe it's the Poconos, where up-and-coming downtowns and higher education are creating new opportunities. Maybe it's Altoona, which seems poised for downtown revitalization. Or what about Williamsport, among those in the state impacted heavily by Marcellus Shale.
