Green lighting at PIT gets green light

on
Parking lots and garages at Pittsburgh International Airport will be refitted with 1,500 energy-saving LED fixtures from Appalachian Lighting Systems in Ellwood City, Allegheny County executive Dan Onorato announced Monday.

“U.S. Department of Energy tests show that our luminaires are among the most efficient in the world,” says company president Dave McAnally. “We earned three of the top five spots internationally in efficiency measurements. It’s a world-class product.”

The Allegheny County Airport Authority will use an $800,000 grant by the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA) to install the new system. The LED lighting system will consume an estimated 83 percent less energy and result in $158,754 in annual energy savings, with 2.1 milion kWh saved. Of the total cost of $1.6 million, $800,00 will come from the Authority’s energy savings from the project over the next decade. Manufacture and installation will create or preserve 75 well-paying green jobs, says the county.

In March Appalachian Lighting Systems won an Allegheny County contract to install LED lighting at the Allegheny County Jail in downtown Pittsburgh. As a result of its pilot projects, “we’re getting quite a few other calls. We’ve got a little advantage right now,” says McAnally. “The good news is, the market will be so big there will be room for a number of companies in relighting America.”

McAnally says that funds for the project should be released in 30 to 60 days, with installation in about 90 days.
