Southwest PA information technology and human resources consulting company Newton Consulting has only been around since 2003, but it already employs about 60 workers with more than 40 subcontractors. And this fall, the company's founder opened another business under the Newton name.
The first business founded by consultant Rick Newton primarily provides services including IT management and application development, along with employee recruiting and benefits consulting. Its talent includes alumni of big-name companies like Accenture and PricewaterhouseCoopers and it counts as clients life-sciences giant GlaxoSmithKline, aluminum maker Alcoa and engineering software developer Ansys.
Newton Consulting, which is based in Claysville, recently spun a portion of its IT consulting business into a new venture, Newton Enterprise. That company will focus on shorter-term projects, especially for medium-sized firms that are implementing new computer systems designed to better run their companies. Over the next several years experts predict that many medium-sized businesses will be adopting these IT systems, creating an opportunity for ventures like Newton Enterprise.
“In that market space, you have a lot of people who say they understand the technology, but you don't have people who understand the business functionality,” Newton says. “We're business experts who know the technology cold.”
The new company, with an office in Pittsburgh, will be run by Chris Hafner, who has two decades of experience in the field. And Newton adds that the spinoff means both businesses can focus on what they do best.
