Meadville plastics maker expands into new building, hiring 25

on
Throughout the downturn in the economy, a northwest PA plastics company looked for chances to expand its business. Now Tech Molded Plastics is in the midst of nearly doubling its space and looking for new hires.

Tech Molded Plastics, which employs about 100 people in Meadville, designs and makes products for several industries including the medical, automotive and electronics sectors. During the recession, it poured its resources into employee training and new technology – about $1 million last year, VP Mark Hanaway says. The business also hired 28 full-time workers in 2010. As a result, it found itself running out of space.

Good timing meant that Tech Molded Plastics was able to buy a 38,800-square foot building from Trojan Inc., a light and lamp manufacturer that was consolidating its own facilities. The plastics maker now has more than 92,000 square feet of space. Between the building itself and the new equipment it contains, Tech Molded Plastics spent about $1.5 million.

Hanaway says the company is building a corridor to connect the two buildings. Management expects to be completely moved in by June. The manufacturer also plans to hire at least 25 new people this year, from entry-level employees to more experienced workers.
