SEPTA extends display of new Silverliner V railcar

on

SEPTA passengers curious about the future of the regional rail line will now get until Saturday evening, Oct. 18, to get a look at the Silverliner V railcar mock-up on display at Suburban station.

The new railcar display on Track 0 at Suburban Station was originally scheduled to end on Thursday, Oct. 16, but SEPTA officials extended the display, citing overwhelming public interest.

The Silverliner V mock-up, which arrived in August, is the future of SEPTA railcars. Each will have 108 to 110 seats, electronic destination signs inside and outside, automatic station announcements, larger windows, wider aisles and more comfortable seating. The new railcars will be able to carry more passengers, more comfortably, according to SEPTA.

With ridership increasing to more than 35 million in 2007, SEPTA is at its highest ridership levels in 25 years. The regional rail line ordered 120 Silverliner V railcars from United Transit Systems, a consortium of Hyundai Rotem of South Korea and Sojitz Corporation of America.

The Silverliner V pilot car is expected to arrive in Philadelphia in the spring for inspection and testing before production of the full fleet is approved.

The mock-up display will now run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18; it was originally scheduled to end Thursday, Oct. 16.
