Wyoming County’s Skyhaven Airport expands with state grant

on

Businesses in Wyoming County will get a lift from improvements at Skyhaven Airport, which will launch a major expansion this summer.

The general service airport will extend its 2,000-foot runway to 3,000 feet with the help of $375,000 in PennDOT funds. Funding for the grants comes from the state’s jet fuel tax and is administered by PennDOT’s Bureau of Aviation. Statewide, the grants leverage $904,800 in local matching funds.

Skyhaven’s Morgan Gay says the extension will let larger aircraft land in Tunkhannock rather than in Wilkes Barre, a 30-minute drive away. Local firms including Proctor and Gamble, Deer Park Lumber, natural gas drillers, stone quarries, as well as recreational users, will benefit, according to Gay.
