For as much as we know about the availability of natural gas in the vast Marcellus Shale formation that stretches across PA and into New York, there is much we are still learning.
One piece of valuable information we don’t yet have is what the value chain for a single Marcellus Shale natural gas well in PA looks like. That’s about to change, thanks to a group of University of Pittsburgh students. Led by Katz Graduate School of Business professor Bill Hefley and Shaun Seydor, the director of PantherlabWorks at the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence, a group of Pitt studnets toured a Marcellus Shale well site in Washington County as part of a research project into its value chain.
Both undergrad business and Katz MBA students toured the drill site last week and will seek to understand the business factors of a single Marcellus Shale well in order to “characterize the supply chain complexities and identify regional entrepreneurship opportunities,” according to a PantherlabWorks-issued news release.
The study, slated for publication later this year in the fall, will identify and quantify the aspects of the value chain for the lifecycle of the well site operation.
