John Cook, founder and CEO of DIV Text LLC, which develops websites and provides software and training for website development and Internet marketing, has developed a new plugin for the popular publishing platform WordPress. He sells online video tutorials, has published several tech-related books including a new one on 3D gaming and is hard at work on new product ideas.
Did we mention that he's a 21-year-old Penn State student?
Since middle school, Cook, a native of Roanoke, VA, has been dabbling in website development. In 2006, “I saw an opportunity to create a web-based, web creator. I thought it would be a cool project. I didn't realize it would take this long,” he says.
Cook's new DIV Layer WordPress plugin allows users of the hugely popular content management system and open source blogging platform to easily edit the design of their websites. “I saw that it was frustrating. To change one little thing, you had to figure out coding and do all the research,” he says.
The plug-in, like WordPress, is free, a way, Cook says, to drive traffic – and potential customers – to his company's website.
Cook will graduate in 2013 as a double major in security risk analysis and information science and technology. His career plans are uncertain, but he hopes to build his business and possibly stay in Pennsylvania.
